Traditions are one of the things that make the holidays special. Those repeated rites, carried over from year to year, are what families cherish most and they generate the most vibrant memories. Some are unique to individual families, while others are more universal. It may be a special food to eat, a song to sing, or a book to read. Perhaps it is a visit to a special holiday destination to see lights and decorations. Or in some cases it is simply the order of a routine, doing things the same way, with the same people, year after year.

My family has one crazy tradition that we can’t seem to shake. On Christmas Eve, we take a trip to the grocery store and each of my twins gets to pick out her very own box of cereal. Yep, cereal. What makes it special is that they each get their very own box, and that they can pick whatever kind of cereal they want. During the rest of the year, they are limited to “healthy” choices, but on Christmas Eve, anything goes. You can imagine the selections; most of them feature a Captain or a Count or Choco in their title, and should be classified as desserts rather than a nourishing start to the day! Their selected cereal makes a grand breakfast for Christmas morning, and they try to make their box last for at least a few post-holiday meals. Sometimes they even share a few spoonfuls with each other! It’s a quirky thing, but it’s become a very important ritual to them.
