In 2010, I’ll be posting weekly “Ten for ‘10″ features, top 10 lists about twins and multiples. This week, check out these ten strategies for managing multiples’ messes. It is amazing how even the most well-organized home can deteriorate into destruction when twins or triplets take over. Every age and stage of childhood is accompanied by “stuff” that accumulates throughout the house, whether it is baby equipment, toys, school supplies or clothing. Preemie Twins Fare Better than Singletons

A recent study suggests that very premature twins (those born between 28 and 31 weeks) were less likely to die in the first few weeks after birth and also less likely to need oxygen. However, that was not the case for babies considered extremely premature — born prior to 27 weeks. Twins in that category were more susceptible to death and complications such as serious brain bleeds. The risk was greatest for same-sex twins with a size discordance, where their birth weights differed by more than fifteen percent.

Twins in the Winter Olympics

Are you enjoying the winter Olympics? I find them fascinating. There are so many different sports events, many that I had never heard of before. Skeleton? Curling? Short Track? Halfpipe? I’m learning a lot! As in the summer Olympics the winter athletes have some interesting twin connections.

• Lanny Barnes is a member of the U.S. biathlon team, a sport which combines cross-country skiing and shooting. Her identical twin sister, Tracy Barnes, narrowly missed making the 2010 team due to weather and schedule inconsistencies that prevented her from competing in a qualifying event. Both competed in the 2006 games in Torino.

• Daron Rahlves is a dad of two-year-old boy/girl twins named Miley and Dreyson. He is also a three-time Olympian in alpine skiing, but in 2010 he competes in ski cross, which along with aerials and moguls comprises the sport of freestyle skiing. In ski cross, a group of skiers race a course of bumps and turns. It’s a combination of skiing and motorbike “motorcross” racing, and the event makes its debut at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. It sounds quite daring; I’m sure Rahlves’ adventurous spirit will serve him well as a dad of twins!

• Twins know a thing or two about teamwork, and two members of the U.S. women’s hockey team bring that teamwork to the ice. At age 19, Jocelyne and Monique Lamoureux are among the youngest members of the hockey team. They grew up playing hockey with four older brothers in North Dakota. After playing one season at the University of Minnesota, the girls will play for the University of North Dakota next year.

Parent’s Poll: What Do You Do With Your Twins’ Clothing After They Outgrow It?

One of the great disadvantages of multiples is an inability to utilize hand-me-downs from sibling to sibling. Since they generally wear the same size clothing in the same season — except in some cases where twins are different sizes — parents of twins end up with a double dose of wardrobe that is quickly outgrown.
